Planning

Your first half marathon abroad: what to plan, and when

WhichMarathon guide · Updated 16 Oct 2026

Running your first half marathon abroad is a brilliant way to see a city. It also adds things to organise that a race at home doesn't. Here's what to do, and when.

16 weeks or more before

  • Choose the race and enter. Check whether it uses a ballot. If it does, the window may close months before race day (see how race ballots work).
  • Book a hotel near the start, with free cancellation. Race-weekend hotels fill up and prices rise.
  • Check the entry rules. Some countries, such as Italy, ask overseas runners for a medical certificate or a race licence. Your race's rules will say.

12 weeks before

  • Start a training plan built around race day. Most first-time half plans run 10 to 12 weeks.
  • Book flights or trains. Arrive at least the day before the race. Many races make you collect your bib in person, often the day before.

4 weeks before

  • Settle your race kit. Race in shoes and clothes you've already done long runs in. Nothing new on race day.
  • Check the race-day weather pattern for that city and month, and plan layers you can throw away at the start.
  • Get travel insurance and check it covers taking part in a running event.

Race week

  • Ease off your training. Short, easy runs with a few strides keep your legs fresh.
  • Pack race kit in your hand luggage. If your bag goes missing, you can still run.
  • Check bib collection times and the start location, and how you'll get there on race morning.

Race weekend

  • Eat food you know the night before, and plan breakfast: hotel breakfasts often start too late for a race.
  • Get to the start early. Toilet queues and bag drops take longer at big races.
  • Start steady. The crowd will pull you along. Use the pace calculator to know your target.

After the race

Keep walking for a bit, eat and drink something soon after you finish, and then enjoy the city. It's what the trip was for.
